Driven by innovative and ongoing customer input, John Deere commemorates its 75th year as a leader in the dozer market. Upon its entry into the dozer business, John Deere has focused on meeting customer needs to improve jobsite efficiencies. Beginning production in 1949 in Dubuque, Iowa, the John Deere line-up of dozers has evolved through the years with innovation that has been solving industry-wide challenges.

Looking back at key milestones for its dozer family, John Deere debuted various industry-leading solutions and breakthrough designs that paved the way for today's reliable, powerful and tech-packed models.

1949 — John Deere began manufacturing MC Dozers in Dubuque, Iowa.

1958 — The 440 Crawler Dozer entered the market as the first all-yellow machine built specifically for industrial applications. This model stood out as John Deere's first all-hydraulic bulldozer with 6-way power-angle-tilt blade, leading the charge with its ground-breaking design.

1965 — John Deere introduced dozer T-Bar blade controls, as well as the first integral machines with the new industrial model numbers. These models included the JD350 and JD450 crawlers, which were configured distinctly as dozers or loaders.

1976 — John Deere became the first North American manufacturer to utilize dual-path hydrostatic drive on its dozer line-up.

1988 — New full powershift transmission models were introduced, including the 400G, 450G, 550G and 650G models, which offered four forward and four reverse speeds, expanding capability on the jobsite.

1999 — Dual path hydrostatic drive was introduced on the 450H, 550H, 650H models and continues to date in the full John Deere dozer lineup.

2001 — John Deere introduced its largest dozer ever with the roll-out of the 1050C. The 1050C led the way for the updates and innovations you see in the 1050 P-Tier today.

2010 — John Deere unveiled the industry's first 764 High Speed Dozer, the first new machine form in decades, boasting travel speeds of up to 16 mph (26 km/h).

John Deere Dozers are designed with the operator in mind. The feedback taken from customers goes directly into the design of the machine. John Deeres hydrostatic solution makes operation simple for the operator to conquer any task, each track has its own independent hydrostatic pump and motor while the blade and ripper functions are independent. The operator can tailor both the transmission and hydraulic operating characteristics to their desired preference. We built the years of knowledge gained on hydrostatics into the 850 X-Tier as well to still give that dual path benefit with all the gained advantages of electric motors.

  • Large and in charge – Hydrostatic components are sized appropriately to the machine size for precise control and durability
  • Constant power to both tracks – Allows operators to carry heavy loads through turns and counter-rotate both while in gear and in neutral
  • Performance when you need it – The operator can independently control hydraulic and transmission functions without sacrificing hydraulic speed
  • More work, less service – Hydraulic and hydrostatic oil change intervals are 4,000 hours providing more time to work
  • E-Drive Performance – The 850 X-Tier adds another dynamic model in the dozer lineup to conquer tasks with precision and performance
  • Situational Awareness – Advanced Vision systems keep operators aware of their surroundings

For improved operator experience and situational awareness, John Deere dozers come with varying levels of vision systems and object detection to increase visibility and situational awareness from the operator’s seat. Each of these levels of camera systems are eligible for future upgrades as the jobsite evolves.

Rear Camera

The rear-view camera is mounted underneath the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) condenser unit and displayed through the 8in primary machine display on the B-Post. Rear view cameras improve operator awareness behind the machine and are mandatory for some customers. The rear-view camera is available as a factory option or can be added later as a field kit.

Uptime on the jobsite isnt demanded, it’s expected. Designing equipment to be reliable and having a dealer network ready to support is key to success. A focus on L-series dozers that carried into the P-Tier machines is to design for reliability. Putting this emphasis on the machine resulted in a reduction in hose connections, wire harness bundle sizes, and ease of daily service checks.

  • Efficiently routed - The redesigned mainframes of the P-Tier dozers optimize hose and harness routings for hydraulic and electrical components. This reduces harness and hose rub points to keep your machine running longer.
  • Unbeatable Service access – Service doors are large for easy access to daily service points. The periodic maintenance decal is located inside the rear service door. The 850 size machines feature a tilting cab for quick access below.
  • Ground level Daily Service checks – If you make it easy it has a better chance to get completed, all of the daily checks on the Construction P-Tier dozers are ground level.

Overview

Dozer operators have one goal: move as much dirt as possible without wasting time OR money. With the 850 X-Tier dozer operators have the confidence knowing they have additional power and efficiency to move material quicker while also saving fuel comfortably in the cab. How?  The dual drive path provides a significant noise reduction in the cab thanks to reduced engine speeds and quieter E-Drive components.  Additionally, E-Drive has a higher torque output, resulting in a 10 percent productivity gain in high load applications, and a 20 percent fuel savings in applications with light to moderate loads. Integrating this machine with Next Gen SmartGrade™ means operators will enjoy the added power without the added expense of burning more fuel.

Deere has a history of bringing differentiated E-drive solutions to the market. The electric drive technology of the 850 X-Tier closely resembles the technology used on the 944 X-tier loader that has accumulated over 3 million field hours. The E-Drive technology provides confidence to customers that this proven technology isn’t new to John Deere. The 850X-Tier is its own machine not an option of the P-Tier therefore provides differentiating performance and features over the P-Tier.
